Nutrition
Q. What can a nutritionist do for me?
A. A nutritionist can help you learn how to balance your diet to ensure that you are getting the right combination of protein, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins and minerals to meet your health requirements. If you have health conditions such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, energy fluctuations, emotional swings, decreased immunity and other symptoms; these can be addressed through healthy nutrition. You will also learn how many calories you require for your activity level and weight goals. You should learn how to eat healthy foods and not rely on fad diets to maintain weight and promote good health. TOP
Q. What can I expect in the initial appointment?
A. Prior to your first visit you will be given some forms to complete. A health history will be taken based on your current health and family medical history. You should bring a copy of recent blood results and state your food preferences and aversions. After reviewing your health history and taking measurements (height, weight, body fat, and wrist size), your counselor and you will set realistic health goals for the future. TOP
Q. How many sessions will I require?
A. It really depends on what you are trying to achieve and each case is different. Research has shown that 3-4 sessions are usually required to achieve optimal lowering in cholesterol. Weight loss sessions require 6 sessions and follow up monthly sessions. A minimum of 3 sessions is required to really start to make changes. TOP
Q. What results will I expect to see?
A. You should be able to achieve significant changes over a 3 month period. Recommended changes to your diet can bring about a 25% reduction in LDL cholesterol, sustained weight loss and marked changes to high blood pressure. Bear in mind that for weight loss, people who are heavy lose weight more quickly that those who only have a few pounds to lose. TOP
Q. Which food do you find is often absent from the average person’s diet?
A. Leafy greens are the vegetables that are easily missed from the American diet quite simply because we do not know how to cook them! Try to include leafy greens (collard greens, bok choy, kale, spinach to name a few) in your diet every day. Why? Because they are high in calcium, magnesium, iron, potassium, phosphorous and zinc, and vitamins A, C, E and K. They are crammed full of fiber, folic acid, chlorophyll and many other micronutrients and phytochemicals. TOP
Q. Is organic food better for your health?
A. There are clear advantages to eating organic foods since they reduce the exposure to pesticides but it’s important to eat a variety of fruits and vegetables whether they are organic or not. Most people limit organic foods because of the expense but remember that your supermarket is not the only source of fresh organic produce in the summer time. There are now a variety of food co-ops and farmer’s markets in your area. Another option is to consider having a small organic garden in your backyard-it’s fun to watch things grow and harvest them and it can be a hobby for all ages. TOP
Q. Should I be concerned about the mercury levels in seafood?
A. Fish such as mackerel, sardines, herring, trout, tuna and salmon contain 2 particular kinds of omega-3 fatty acids—eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) that have many health benefits. However, reports concerning high levels of certain toxin and mercury in these fish have raised concerns about the safety of eating seafood.
Recent studies have concluded that benefits of eating certain fish outweigh the risks, in most cases. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) advises women who are pregnant, women who may become pregnant, nursing mothers, and young children to avoid eating shark, swordfish, king mackerel, and tilefish, and to limit consumption of albacore (white) tuna to 6 ounces per week. Additional information about mercury and seafood is available on the following website: www.fda.gov/Food/FoodSafety

Skincare
Q. Should I be wary of chemical preservatives in skincare?
A. As much as 70% of what you put on your skin ends up absorbed into your body so you should be wary of what you use on your skin. Preservatives that are chemical in nature can cause irritants and skin allergies. Chemical preservatives have been linked to cancer. The FDA have ruled that the percentage of paraben used in cosmetics is small and safe but have called for further research to be conducted. You can get further information from these websites:
www.fda.gov/Cosmetics/ProductandIngredientSafety
www.organicconsumers.org/bodycare
A good organic skincare line will use a botanical blend as a preservative. It means that the shelf life of the product will not be long but it’s a small price to pay for a high quality product. It is important for you to read cosmetic labels to determine if there are any chemicals that are used as preservatives. It’s our belief that the lotions and creams that we apply everyday should enhance our well being rather than over-load our systems with even more harsh chemicals. Choose simply products and read labels carefully. TOP
Q. What are the benefits of organic & natural skincare?
A.The skin is the largest organ in the body and acts as a barrier against damaging elements such as, the rain, sun, wind and extreme temperatures as well as pollution. Besides all the natural factors which we cannot control, our skin also has to combat elements that we ingest via the food we eat and products that we use on our skin. Many skincare products have harmful chemicals in them which can cause sensitivities but organic products are harvested from fruits, plants and seeds that have not been sprayed with pesticides. Beware though as many organic skincare products do contain preservatives to extend their shelf life so read the label carefully or use products that are freshly made but ensure that you use these up quickly. TOP
Q. When should I have anti-aging facials?
A. As a general rule you should only use anti-aging techniques when you are 30 plus or when you notice signs of wrinkles or age spots. Remember that a good nutrient dense diet is key to preventing damage to your skin so it’s more important to pay attention to your nutrition. TOP
Q. What is a proper skincare regimen?
A. You should aim to support your or enhance your skin’s natural functions such as healing and maintaining excellent barrier against the environment and internal toxins. Most organic products use beneficial plant ingredients that address the underlying conditions rather than just the symptoms. Do not use harsh products but chose products that nourish your skin and enhance the skin’s natural barrier function. Our products aim to do just this!
